A good old
fashioned spirited debate has always been at the core of this republic,
and more often than not it was a good old fashioned spirit that helped
to fuel our democratic discourse. Many of our earliest purveyors of
political speak loosened their lips on that luscious libation produced
by the Laird family at America’s first licensed distillery in
Scobeyville, New Jersey. George
Washington introduced its virtues to the Virginia colony; Abraham
Lincoln poured it at his Springfield tavern, and William Henry Harrison
coddled his constituency with generous portions at Whig rallies. The
